How to make 'Screw Shoes'

Thinking of hibernating because you don’t like the idea of running on ice and snow?

Have you purchased Yak Tracks and seem to lose one every year on the trail?

Let me introduce you to Screw Shoes.

For under $10 bucks you will have enough screws to do yours, and numerous friends after you tell them how great it works.

To make a pair of screw shoes, you need to get a package of 1/2″ x # 8 hex head self taping screws.  These will be available at a Home Hardware, Home Depot, Lowes or your local hardware store.

Next get a socket to fit the end of the hex head screw, a cordless drill, and of course a pair of trail running shoes.

Decide where you want the screws, they MUST be inserted to the lugs.

Don’t place them too close to the edges or in the grooves of the shoe. For best traction the lugs on the heel and the ball of the foot areas of the tread should be your prime target area. There is no set number of screws that should be used, so you can do some test runs to see what works best for you.

If you have a reasonable amount of tread left on your shoes, you shouldn’t have to worry about screw penetration, but make sure to check before you go running in them.

Place the screws in sufficient numbers to cover the ball of the foot area and heel, and anywhere else you like.  Note the random pattern in the photo.

The great thing about the screw shoe is if you lose a few screws , you just screw some more back in,  In the spring you simply unscrew them and you are back on the roads and trails again, no worse for wear.

WARNING!!!

Do not wear them in doors, as they will ruin the finish on hard wood floors or other surfaces, and you will think you are wearing ice skates if you wear them on ceramic tile.

You do not  want to wear them while driving, as you may find that the screw heads do not slide off the gas pedal when going for the break, and that tiny bit of delay could be a cause of an accident.

Just saying!!

Promise of a trail run that ends with Champagne and Mars Bars draws a crowd

Thanks to the 42 trail runners who came out for a fun run that ended with booze and chocolate.

A special thanks to all the people who I guess don't like my choice of cheap bubbly wine and mini chocolate bars, and brought out better candy and chocolate as well as baked goods, imported beer, some not as cheap bubbly wine and Baileys Irish Cream.

As you can see in the photo below there was a long line of vehicles parked along the road at the run start line.

As of next week, Soiled Sport Saturday Trail Runs will be at our winter hiatus trail location: MEDWAY FOREST TRAIL (starting at the Archeological Museum off of Wonderland Road South near Fanshawe Road)

Start time is 8:01 am sharp

Sunday morning trail runs with Bill are at Kains Woods Trail - West

Parking on Westdel Bourne at Kains Road. Start time is 8:01 am

Wednesday evening trail runs are held at this location as well and start time is 6:01 pm

Headlamps are required.

Champagne and Mars Bar Trail Run 2021

Hello to all you trail kickers.

It has been over a year and half since we last got together for a trail run, and what better way to entice you to show up again than to tempt you with cheap chocolate and even cheaper booze.

To those who have not been to our pre-COVID 'Champagne and Mars Bar' trail run, we used this as our trail running end of season event.

Normally held on the last Saturday in October at the trail that was the birthplace of the Soiled Sport Trail Running Group, Komoka trails.

This year the Soiled Sport executive invite you on Saturday November 6th to rather than a season ending trail run, but now a season starting 'Champagne and Mars Bar' trail run at Komoka Trails. Start time is 8:01 AM

Please note we meet along Oxford Street east of Woodhull Road. Note the high lighted area in the map below for directions.

To comply with safety protocol we ask that you have a mask on hand and keep a distance when running. For those who have not been out to our trail  runs or those of you who just plain forget, we stop a various locations on the trail to re-group so no on gets lost or runs alone.

Afterwards you are invited to help yourself to some Champagne and Mars Bars under the Soiled Sport tent. Should you have some Halloween candy that you wish to offer up as well, feel free to bring it out. I would say the same thing about the champagne but no trail runner worth his dirt would have any extra booze.

On Wednesday evenings at Kains Woods Trail - West, (Kains Road and Westdel Bourne) at 6:01 and headlamps are required.

Saturday Soiled Sport trail running will also resume and you will get a heads up e-mail with locations in the near future as we are not sure if we will stick to a Medway Trail location for the winter months as we have done in the past.

Parking location shown in yellow

Cheers!

Hope to see you Saturday morning.
